Dr Geraghty started his presentation by setting out the main challenges facing society, which planners have a key role in, including: flooding and climate change, rapid urbanisation, increasing population, ageing demographics, obesity and health, food production, energy security and the impact of technology.

Peter also set out what the RTPI has been doing to raise the profile of planning (in helping tackle the above issues) including giving evidence as select committees, participating in advisory groups, briefing notes for MPs, press releases, delivering high quality research papers, responding to government consultations and showcasing good practice in the Planning Awards for Excellence.

Peter ended his presentation stressing his presidential theme: that we should be Proud of Planning and Proud of Planners!
